Meta plans workforce reduction to boost performance levels
Meta is set to reduce its workforce by approximately 5%, targeting underperforming employees as part of its operational strategy, according to BBC reports. The move could impact around 3,600 positions from the company's global workforce of 72,000.
In a staff memo, CEO Mark Zuckerberg detailed the upcoming changes, describing the year ahead as "intense" and emphasizing the need to elevate performance standards. "I've decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low performers faster," he stated.
The company, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, will begin notifying affected US-based employees by February 10, with international staff receiving updates subsequently. Meta has committed to providing "generous severance" packages to impacted workers and intends to refill these positions in 2025 as part of its long-term staffing strategy.
This latest reduction follows significant workforce changes at Meta in recent years. The company eliminated 10,000 positions in 2023, which Zuckerberg termed the "year of efficiency," following the removal of 11,000 roles in 2022 as part of operational streamlining efforts.
