Marhaba 2024: First Ship Bearing 220 Moroccan Expatriates Docks in Al Hoceima

Anticipation builds as the Marhaba operation gears up for a surge of returning expatriates.

In a significant development marking the commencement of the Marhaba 2024 operation, the first ship carrying approximately 220 Moroccan expatriates (MREs) arrived at the port of Al Hoceima on Saturday. This annual initiative, launched every June, aims to facilitate the return of the Moroccan diaspora during the summer season, ensuring a smooth and welcoming transition back to their homeland.

The vessel, which embarked on its journey from the port of Motril in Spain, carried 64 vehicles and had a capacity for 1,500 passengers and 300 vehicles. Arriving just in time for the celebrations of Eid Al Adha on Monday, the ship’s docking is a prelude to the festive atmosphere anticipated in the coming days.

Adil El Bardi, the director of Al Hoceima port, commented on the successful voyage, highlighting the positive atmosphere that defined the journey. He emphasized the coordinated efforts of various stakeholders, including the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, the Royal Gendarmerie, National Security, Customs, and local port authorities, all of whom played crucial roles in ensuring the operation’s success.

El Bardi assured that comprehensive measures have been put in place at Al Hoceima port to guarantee the comfort and convenience of the arriving passengers. He noted that a significant influx of Moroccan expatriates is expected in the coming days, aligning with the onset of school holidays.

The Marhaba operation, which began on June 5 and will continue until September 15, is supported by an extensive reception system activated by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity. This system spans across Morocco, France, Spain, and Italy, ensuring that support and assistance are available at multiple key points.

Within Morocco, 18 operational spaces have been established at major ports such as Tangier Med, Tangier City, Al Hoceima, and Nador, as well as at various airports. Additionally, six Marhaba spaces are operational in European ports, including Genoa in Italy, Sete and Marseille in France, and Motril, Almeria, and Algeciras in Spain.

As the Marhaba 2024 operation unfolds, the anticipation and excitement among Moroccan expatriates and their families are palpable. The concerted efforts of the various supporting entities promise a seamless and joyous homecoming for many, reaffirming the strong ties between Morocco and its global diaspora.
