Morocco's National Security Directorate Invests $9.2 Million in IT Upgrade to Bolster Crime-Fighting Capabilities

The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) in Morocco has taken a significant step forward in modernizing its technological infrastructure. With a substantial investment of 90 million Moroccan dirhams (approximately $9.2 million USD), the security agency aims to enhance its ability to combat organized crime and address emerging security challenges.

This ambitious project involves the acquisition of state-of-the-art IT equipment for various departments across all regions of Morocco. The investment is divided into five distinct contracts, each targeting specific areas of improvement within the DGSN's technological framework.

A notable portion of the budget, amounting to 25.2 million dirhams ($2.5 million), has been allocated for the purchase of new computers for central services in Rabat. Special emphasis is being placed on upgrading identity data registration centers, which play a crucial role in issuing identity cards and maintaining anthropometric records.

This technological overhaul is part of a broader initiative by the DGSN to digitalize public safety services. In 2023, the agency made significant strides in this direction, implementing a unified police telecommunication network that spans 57 cities across Morocco. This infrastructure, built on advanced optical fiber technology, aims to secure communications and expedite data transfer, thereby meeting the operational demands of modern security service management.

The DGSN's digitalization efforts extend beyond hardware upgrades. The agency is developing various applications and IT solutions designed to empower police officers in their day-to-day operations. One such initiative is the Police District Management Information System (GESTARR), which is currently undergoing experimental use in 350 police stations across six regions.

GESTARR represents a significant leap forward in law enforcement technology. By integrating with the new information system that manages criminal cases, it promises to streamline operations and improve efficiency across police districts.

As Morocco continues to face evolving security challenges, this substantial investment in IT infrastructure demonstrates the government's commitment to equipping its law enforcement agencies with the tools they need to maintain public safety and combat sophisticated criminal activities.

The DGSN's focus on technological advancement aligns with global trends in law enforcement, where data-driven approaches and digital tools are increasingly becoming essential in the fight against crime. As this new system is rolled out across the country, it has the potential to significantly enhance Morocco's security capabilities and set a new standard for law enforcement agencies in the region.
