Major gold discovery in southern Morocco positions kingdom as emerging global producer
A significant gold deposit has been uncovered near Guelmim in southern Morocco, marking a historic milestone for the country’s mining sector. OLAH Palace Trading, a mining exploration firm, announced highly promising results from recent fieldwork, uncovering an extensive network of 34 hydrothermal quartz veins with exceptionally high concentrations of gold.
These veins, which run in a northwest-to-southeast alignment, span the licensed concession zone with depths exceeding 100 meters and widths ranging between 40 centimeters and 1.5 meters. Laboratory assays from drilling and trench samples revealed gold grades between 6 grams and an extraordinary 300 grams per ton, placing the Guelmim discovery among the richest globally. For context, industry standards define deposits exceeding 10 grams per ton as high-grade, underscoring the exceptional quality of this find.
Geological and historical significance
The deposit is rooted in Precambrian hydrothermal systems within the Anti-Atlas formation, located about 200 kilometers south of Agadir. This area, situated above the historic Draa riverbed, has long been associated with alluvial gold deposits. Experts believe the discovery points to primary sources of gold that fueled ancient trade and mining across North and sub-Saharan Africa.
Next steps in exploration
The project will now move into a critical phase of systematic drilling campaigns to establish accurate reserve estimates. Metallurgical studies will also be conducted to determine the most efficient extraction and processing techniques. The deposit’s development comes amid growing global competition for mineral resources and rising demand for secure supply chains.
Morocco’s strategic geographical position as a gateway between Europe and Africa provides logistical advantages for exporting precious minerals, further enhancing the economic potential of this discovery.
Economic and geopolitical impact
The new deposit is expected to solidify Morocco’s position as a key gold producer in North Africa and the global market. Beyond direct economic benefits, the project will create jobs, foster local expertise, and support community development through corporate social responsibility initiatives. Commitments to sustainable mining practices, including water conservation and renewable energy integration, will ensure minimal environmental impact.
This discovery positions Morocco as a rising player in the global gold industry, attracting significant interest from investors, analysts, and international markets. The kingdom’s growing prominence as a gold producer is set to reshape the regional and global minerals landscape.
