Landmark Case in Kerala: Teen Survivor Exposes Years of Systematic Abuse

A devastating case of long-term sexual abuse has emerged in Kerala, India, where an 18-year-old woman has come forward with allegations against 64 men, spanning a period of five years. Law enforcement has already taken 28 suspects into custody as investigations continue.

The case came to light through a government welfare program when counselors visited the survivor's home. The accused individuals, ranging from 17 to 47 years old, include people from the survivor's immediate community—neighbors, sports coaches, and acquaintances of her father.

The survivor, who belongs to the Dalit community, disclosed that the abuse began when she was 13 years old. According to her testimony, a neighbor initiated the abuse by molesting her and capturing explicit photographs, which were subsequently shared with others, leading to continued exploitation. Police reports indicate she endured three instances of gang rape during this period.

The case has prompted multiple investigations under various Indian legal frameworks, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The latter specifically addresses crimes against marginalized communities like Dalits, who continue to face significant social discrimination despite legal protections.

Further concerns have emerged regarding potential abuse during sports camps, as noted by a lawyer heading the district's Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The survivor, an athlete, shared her experiences with a psychologist after the case was reported to authorities. She has since been moved to a CWC-affiliated shelter for her safety.

Investigators have assembled a 25-member team to handle the case, using evidence including communications made through the survivor's father's phone to identify additional suspects. The investigation remains active, with more arrests anticipated as the case develops.
