Keiko Fujimori Wins Peruvian Presidential Election After Closely Contested Runoff

Keiko Fujimori has won the presidential election in Peru following a tightly contested vote, according to near-final results released by the country’s electoral authorities. Her victory marks a significant political shift and returns the Fujimorist movement to power amid a deeply polarized national climate.

The election concluded after weeks of uncertainty and a highly competitive count, with Fujimori, leader of the Fuerza Popular party, narrowly defeating left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez. Although the margin remained slim throughout much of the counting process, final tallies and overseas votes ultimately secured her lead, making a reversal impossible.

This election is considered one of the most closely fought in Peru’s recent history, reflecting deep divisions within Peruvian society across regional, economic, and social lines. Urban and coastal areas largely supported Fujimori, while Sánchez found stronger backing in rural and Andean regions, highlighting contrasting political priorities across the country.

At 51 years old, Fujimori becomes the first woman elected president of Peru by direct universal suffrage. Her victory follows multiple previous unsuccessful presidential bids and represents a historic milestone in the country’s political development.

Her return to the political forefront also revives the legacy of her father, former President Alberto Fujimori, a dominant and controversial figure in Peruvian politics during the 1990s. Analysts note that her administration will face both expectations of continuity from her supporters and strong scrutiny from opponents.

Security was a central issue throughout the campaign, with rising crime rates and organized criminal activity shaping public debate. Fujimori’s platform focused heavily on strengthening law enforcement and improving internal security, a message that resonated strongly in urban centers.

The new president is scheduled to take office on July 28 for a five-year term. She will assume leadership at a time when Peru continues to struggle with institutional instability, having experienced frequent changes in government over the past decade.

Since 2016, the country has faced repeated political crises and leadership turnovers, contributing to public distrust in institutions. Observers say her presidency will be defined by her ability to restore political stability, strengthen governance, and address pressing social and economic challenges.

Fujimori’s election opens a new chapter in Peru’s political landscape, with hopes for stabilization tempered by concerns over polarization and governance challenges in the years ahead.
