Iran deploys 1,000 combat drones amid US naval buildup in Middle East

Iran's military chief vowed a crushing retaliation against any aggression Thursday, as a formidable US naval presence positioned itself in the Middle East. Tehran announced the integration of 1,000 strategic drones into its combat units across all army branches, alongside planned live-fire naval drills in the Strait of Hormuz on February 1 and 2. This escalation unfolds against the backdrop of stalled nuclear talks and rising tensions.

The US Navy recently dispatched the destroyer USS Delbert D. Black to the region, boosting the tally of missile-firing destroyers to six. These vessels now support the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and three littoral combat ships. President Donald Trump warned on social media that the fleet stands ready to strike if needed, urging Iran to return to nuclear negotiations. He emphasized that time is running short and any future assault would surpass the intensity of last June's Operation Midnight Hammer, which targeted Iranian nuclear sites during the 12-day war with Israel.

In response, Major General Amir Hatami, chief of staff of Iran's armed forces, stated that the military is bolstering its strategic edge to deliver swift, overwhelming countermeasures. The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 percent of global oil supplies pass, remains a focal point of vulnerability.

Compounding the strain, European Union foreign ministers designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, aligning it with groups like al-Qaeda and Islamic State. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the label fitting for a regime that brutally suppresses its people's protests. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the move as a punitive signal to Tehran over deadly crackdowns, with additional sanctions targeting 21 state entities and officials, including Iran's interior minister and attorney general.

Diplomatic efforts persist amid the standoff. Turkey offered to mediate between Washington and Tehran during a visit by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan cautioned against attacking Iran, warning it would reignite war. Russia urged restraint, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov cautioning that force would breed regional chaos. Reports from the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency documented 6,373 confirmed deaths and over 40,000 arrests from protests and subsequent repression, with investigations into 17,000 more reported fatalities. Iranian officials, including Araghchi and Supreme Leader advisor Ali Shamkhani, affirmed their forces are primed for immediate, forceful reprisal.
