Germany lifts weapon range restrictions for Ukraine amid rising tensions

Germany’s newly appointed chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has announced a significant shift in policy regarding military support for Ukraine. In a bold statement, he declared that Germany and its allies have removed all range restrictions on weapons supplied to Ukraine, allowing the country to better defend itself against Russian aggression.

Merz emphasized the importance of unwavering support for Ukraine, stating, "We will do everything in our power to continue supporting Ukraine. This also means no longer having any range restrictions on the weapons we supply. Ukraine can now also defend itself by attacking military positions in Russia." His remarks were shared on the social media platform X, reflecting a commitment to enhancing Ukraine’s military capabilities.

In a follow-up statement, Merz clarified that this policy change also applies to weapons provided by British, French, and American forces. "That means Ukraine can also defend itself by, for example, attacking military positions in Russia," he explained during a forum organized by WDR public television. This strategic decision marks a significant escalation in the level of military assistance being offered to Ukraine.

Merz’s comments come in the wake of a devastating missile and drone attack by Moscow on Ukrainian targets, which saw over 300 projectiles launched in one week. The chancellor has previously called for a robust defense of democracy, asserting that the current geopolitical landscape requires a strong commitment to uphold freedom and security, both domestically and internationally.

In response to these developments, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov issued a warning, labeling the lifting of range restrictions as a dangerous move that undermines efforts for a political resolution. He cautioned that such actions could provoke a military response, stating that the West would become a target for the Kremlin.

As tensions escalate, Merz’s administration appears resolute in its support for Ukraine, aiming to bolster the country's defenses while navigating the complex diplomatic landscape of the ongoing conflict.
