Youtube resolves global outage that disrupted video recommendations
YouTube announced Tuesday evening that it had resolved a technical outage that disrupted video recommendations for hundreds of thousands of users worldwide.
The disruption, which lasted several hours, prevented videos from appearing properly across the platform, including on the main website, mobile applications, and the child-focused service YouTube Kids. Users reported that the recommendation feed — a central feature that suggests personalized content — had stopped functioning, significantly affecting navigation and viewing experiences.
In a statement published on its official help page, the company confirmed that the issue affecting its recommendation system had been fixed and that all services were returning to normal operation.
According to Downdetector, a website that tracks real-time service disruptions, more than 300,000 reports were filed during the peak of the outage, with the highest concentration of complaints recorded around 01:00 GMT.
Journalists and users in multiple regions later confirmed that access to the platform had been restored and that normal functionality resumed within a few hours.
Owned by Google, YouTube remains one of the world’s largest digital platforms, with more than 2.5 billion monthly active users. Given its scale, even short-lived technical disruptions can have widespread global impact, affecting content creators, advertisers, and viewers alike.
While the company did not provide detailed technical explanations regarding the cause of the malfunction, such incidents highlight the reliance of modern digital ecosystems on complex algorithmic systems that power recommendations and user engagement.
As online platforms continue to expand their global footprint, maintaining service reliability remains critical to preserving user trust and ensuring uninterrupted access to digital content.
