GenZ 212 sparks protests for dignity across Morocco

Since late September 2025, Morocco has witnessed a historic wave of social unrest led by its youngest generation, GenZ 212, named after the country’s international dialing code. This decentralized movement, organized through platforms like Discord, has emerged as a powerful voice against systemic inequality, corruption, and declining public services.

The catalyst for this movement was the tragic deaths of eight pregnant women due to medical neglect in public hospitals in Agadir. This incident galvanized young Moroccans across the nation, prompting leaderless protests in cities such as Casablanca, Marrakech, and Rabat. Participants are rejecting traditional political affiliations, instead demanding systemic accountability and reforms under the unifying slogan, “We demand the right to a dignified life.”

Core grievances and demands

GenZ 212’s demands reflect the struggles of Morocco’s youth, who face an unemployment rate of nearly 36% for those under 24. Protesters point to failing public services, stark economic disparities, and widespread corruption as root causes of their discontent. The movement’s primary demands include:

Healthcare and education reform: Protesters seek increased health budgets to meet global standards and advocate for a revamped school curriculum emphasizing critical thinking and citizenship.

Economic justice: Calls for raising the minimum wage to 4,000 dirhams, price caps on essential goods, and policies to combat monopolies while supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.

Transparency and accountability: GenZ 212 demands greater scrutiny of public contracts and stronger mechanisms to fight corruption.

A direct appeal to the monarchy

While the movement has explicitly stated that it is not anti-monarchy, it appeals directly to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, whom many view as the ultimate authority capable of addressing their grievances. Participants highlight the disparity between Morocco’s international image as a modernizing nation and the harsh realities of inequality faced by its youth.

Government response and societal impact

The authorities have responded with a combination of budgetary measures and intensified security crackdowns involving arrests and lengthy prison sentences for some protesters accused of incitement. Despite this, GenZ 212 has successfully re-politicized Moroccan youth, bridging class and regional divides to push for dignity, inclusion, and systemic reform.

As the movement grows, its influence on Moroccan governance and society marks a critical moment in the country’s history, signaling a generational shift in the fight for social justice.
