French physiotherapists to provide preventive health assessments from October
France will allow physiotherapists to conduct official preventive health assessments beginning in October 2026, broadening access to early health screening as part of the country's strategy to strengthen preventive medicine.
The measure was confirmed by the French Ministry of Health after a decree was published in the Official Journal, extending a service that is already offered by physicians, midwives, nurses and pharmacists.
The initiative aims to improve the early detection of health risks and encourage healthier lifestyles in response to an aging population and the growing burden of chronic diseases.
Comprehensive consultations focused on prevention
The new preventive assessments will last between 30 and 45 minutes and will evaluate a range of factors that influence long-term health.
During the consultations, physiotherapists will discuss topics including dietary habits, physical activity, addictive behaviors, mental well-being and other indicators that may signal emerging health vulnerabilities.
The objective is to identify potential risks before they develop into more serious medical conditions while promoting healthier everyday behaviors.
Targeted age groups eligible for the programme
The preventive consultations will be available to individuals belonging to one of four designated age groups:
- 18 to 25 years
- 45 to 50 years
- 60 to 65 years
- 70 to 75 years
These life stages have been selected to encourage prevention at key moments when health risks or lifestyle changes may have a significant long-term impact.
Strengthening France's preventive health strategy
By expanding the number of healthcare professionals authorized to provide preventive assessments, French authorities hope to make these services more accessible and reduce pressure on the healthcare system through earlier intervention.
The reform reflects a broader shift toward prevention rather than treatment, with healthcare providers playing an increasingly active role in identifying risk factors and supporting patients before chronic illnesses develop.
The inclusion of physiotherapists is expected to reinforce multidisciplinary care and improve access to preventive services across the country.
