French health authorities say no evidence of new Hantavirus variant

French health authorities announced that recent analyses of a hantavirus infection detected in a French passenger do not indicate the presence of a new or more dangerous variant of the virus.

According to officials, researchers from Institut Pasteur completed the full genetic sequencing of the virus strain identified in a patient who became seriously ill after traveling aboard the MV Hondius expedition vessel. Early findings suggest that the virus closely resembles known strains already circulating in parts of South America.

Health experts explained that no evidence currently points to increased transmissibility or greater severity compared with previously identified versions of the Andes strain of hantavirus. Scientists noted that the genetic differences observed remain within the range of natural viral evolution.

The outbreak linked to the cruise ship reportedly began in April and has affected several passengers. A number of infections and deaths have been associated with the incident, while health authorities continue monitoring individuals who may have been exposed to the virus.

Hantavirus infections are relatively rare but can cause severe respiratory illness in humans. The virus is commonly transmitted through contact with infected rodents or contaminated environments. Certain strains identified in Latin America are also capable of limited human-to-human transmission.

Medical researchers emphasized that hantaviruses are generally considered more genetically stable than viruses such as COVID-19 or seasonal influenza, making major mutations less likely. Public health officials nevertheless continue surveillance measures and laboratory investigations to better understand the outbreak and prevent additional cases.

French authorities stated that hospitalized contacts connected to the incident have not shown symptoms so far, although precautionary medical monitoring remains in place.
