France calls for emergency UN Security Council meeting over Lebanon situation
France has requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council following escalating tensions in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces reportedly took control of the historic Beaufort Castle area, raising concerns in Paris over regional stability.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that the request was made in response to what France considers a serious development in the ongoing conflict dynamics in the region. According to his remarks, while Israel has the right to self-defense against attacks from Hezbollah, the continuation of military operations on Lebanese territory raises significant legal and humanitarian concerns.
Barrot emphasized that France acknowledges Israel’s security needs but insists that prolonged military presence and territorial advances inside Lebanon cannot be justified. He also referenced the importance of respecting the ceasefire agreement established in mid-April, stressing that any violations could further destabilize the situation.
The French government argues that the situation may constitute a breach of international law and risks undermining diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region. Paris has called on all parties to respect existing agreements and avoid further escalation.
The emergency meeting request reflects France’s broader diplomatic push within the United Nations framework to prevent further deterioration of the situation in Lebanon and to reinforce adherence to international commitments.
