Fostering Sino-Moroccan Synergies: A Meeting of Strategic Minds in Beijing
In a remarkable display of enduring diplomatic ties, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, engaged in a pivotal meeting with Wang Yi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China and a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, in Beijing on Wednesday.
This high-level dialogue unfolded within the broader context of the positive momentum that has characterized bilateral relations since the signing of the Strategic Partnership Declaration by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Excellency President Xi Jinping during the Royal Visit to Beijing in May 2016.
Reflecting this spirit of cooperation, the two nations reaffirmed their clear, consistent, and reciprocal support on fundamental issues that touch upon the vital interests of the Kingdom of Morocco and the People's Republic of China. The ministers also commended the depth and richness of the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, applauding the dynamic and ambitious initiatives undertaken to strengthen bilateral political, economic, and cultural ties.
The meeting served as a pivotal platform to explore avenues for enhancing economic and commercial exchanges, particularly within the framework of Morocco's global industrial ecosystems. Encouraging Chinese investments in the Kingdom emerged as a key priority, with the Mohammed VI Tanger Tech City, launched during the 2016 Royal Visit to Beijing, standing as an ambitious project for an industrial and intelligent city. This ambitious endeavor exemplifies the convergence of Moroccan and Chinese visions, poised to become a major hub for advanced technologies and next-generation industrial projects.
The increasing flow of Chinese investments in the Kingdom, notably in the sectors of electric mobility, automotive, renewable energies, and infrastructure, bears testament to the success of this initiative. The meeting also highlighted the resurgence of Chinese tourist flows to Morocco, facilitated by the far-sighted decision of the Sovereign to lift visa requirements for Chinese citizens since June 1, 2016, significantly strengthening the cultural and human bonds between the two friendly nations.
During the exchange, Mr. Bourita presented the recent initiatives announced by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, including the one aimed at promoting stability, security, and economic prosperity for the Atlantic-facing African countries; the initiative to facilitate access to the Atlantic Ocean for the Sahel states; and the strategic Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline project, which aims to bolster regional integration and stimulate economic development along the African Atlantic coast and beyond.
For his part, Mr. Wang Yi commended the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in fostering stability and promoting economic and social development within the Kingdom, and praised Morocco's contribution to advancing regional and international peace and security. The two ministers lauded the progress achieved within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), facilitated by the signing of the 2017 Memorandum of Understanding and the 2022 Implementation Plan for the Joint Construction of the BRI.
The discussions between Mr. Bourita and his Chinese counterpart also encompassed several other regional and international issues of mutual interest, underscoring the depth and breadth of the Sino-Moroccan strategic partnership.
