Inflation: Prices Rise to 2.4% in August, Driven by Energy Surge

Inflation continues to rise in France. According to the preliminary estimate published by Insee on Friday, consumer prices increased by 2.4% year-on-year in August, up from 2.1% in July. The acceleration is primarily driven by energy prices, which have surged significantly over the year.

Price increases persist in France. After reaching 2.1% in July, inflation stood at 2.4% year-on-year in August, according to the first estimate released on Friday, August 28, by Insee.

This new increase follows several months of fluctuations and brings the evolution of energy costs back to the forefront of economic concerns.

Energy Pushes Prices Up Again

According to Insee, the acceleration observed in August can be primarily attributed to rising energy prices. These prices have increased by 16.7% year-on-year, with a particularly significant contribution from petroleum products.

The evolution of this component directly impacts the overall price index and explains much of the movement observed between July and August.

This rise contrasts with the situation recorded a year earlier. In August 2025, annual inflation was only 0.9%, before the onset of the Middle East war mentioned in Insee's data.

An Acceleration to Monitor

The increase from 2.1% to 2.4% in just one month does not mean that all prices are rising at the same rate. The evolution of inflation depends on several categories of goods and services, of which energy currently serves as one of the main drivers.

The strong increase in fuels and other petroleum products may also indirectly affect certain transportation and production costs.
