EDF secures $4 billion energy storage project in Oman
French energy company EDF has secured a $4 billion contract to develop and operate Oman's first pumped-storage hydropower facility, marking a significant milestone in the sultanate's efforts to strengthen its electricity system and expand energy storage capacity.
The agreement was announced during the state visit of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to France and represents one of the largest energy infrastructure projects signed between the two countries.
The facility will be built at the Wadi Daysat dam, located approximately 90 kilometres south of Muscat, and will be capable of storing up to 2 gigawatts (GW) of electricity. Once operational, the installation is expected to improve grid stability by storing surplus electricity during periods of low demand and releasing it when consumption peaks.
Pumped-storage hydropower is widely regarded as one of the most efficient large-scale energy storage technologies. The system works by pumping water to an elevated reservoir when excess electricity is available and generating power by releasing the water through turbines when additional electricity is required.
The project forms part of Oman's broader strategy to modernise its energy infrastructure while supporting the integration of renewable power sources such as solar and wind energy. As renewable generation expands, energy storage is becoming increasingly important for maintaining a reliable and balanced electricity grid.
For EDF, the agreement reinforces its international presence in large-scale infrastructure and low-carbon energy projects. The company continues to expand its portfolio of renewable energy and grid flexibility solutions as governments worldwide invest in technologies that support the transition to cleaner energy systems.
Industry analysts view the project as a major step forward for Oman's energy sector, providing long-term benefits for electricity security, network resilience, and the country's ambitions to diversify its energy mix.
