Earthquake injures 13 in China’s Sichuan province as emergency response begins
A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Sichuan Province in southwestern China early Monday, leaving 13 people with minor injuries and prompting a rapid emergency response from local authorities.
According to official reports, the earthquake hit Gaoxian County in the city of Yibin shortly after midnight Beijing time. The epicenter was recorded at a shallow depth of approximately six kilometers, causing strong tremors that were felt across several nearby communities.
Emergency services quickly mobilized following the quake. The injured were transported to local hospitals for treatment, while nearly 200 residents were evacuated from affected areas as a precaution. Rescue teams continue to inspect buildings and infrastructure to ensure public safety and assess any structural damage.
Residents in Gaoxian County and neighboring districts reported intense shaking, with furniture moving inside homes and buildings. The tremors were also felt in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, highlighting the wide reach of the seismic event.
China’s earthquake authorities activated a Level III emergency response, allowing disaster management teams to coordinate rescue operations, monitor aftershocks, and provide assistance to affected communities.
Sichuan is one of China's most seismically active regions due to its location near major geological fault lines. The province has experienced several significant earthquakes over the years, making disaster preparedness and rapid response essential components of local emergency management.
Although no fatalities have been reported, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while urging residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks. Rescue operations and damage assessments are expected to continue as officials work to ensure the safety of local communities.
