Google expands Gemini in Chrome with autonomous web browsing
Google is expanding the capabilities of Gemini in Chrome, bringing its artificial intelligence assistant to more Android users in India while introducing autonomous browsing features designed to let the AI carry out multi-step tasks on the web.
Unlike conventional AI assistants that primarily provide answers or summarize information, Gemini in Chrome is designed to work directly with the webpage a user is viewing. This allows people to ask questions about online content, obtain summaries of lengthy articles and interact with information without leaving the current browsing session.
Google has made Gemini in Chrome available to Android users in India, enabling the assistant to analyze the page currently open in the browser. Users can ask Gemini to explain or summarize content, retrieve specific information from a webpage or help with tasks connected to the material displayed on screen.
The service also integrates with several Google applications, including Google Keep and Google Calendar, expanding the range of actions that can be performed while browsing. Gemini in Chrome additionally incorporates Google's Nano Banana image-generation and editing technology, allowing users to create or modify images without switching to another application.
One of the most significant additions is autonomous browsing, which gives Gemini a more agent-like role. Instead of simply responding to a request, the system can navigate through websites and complete sequences of actions on behalf of the user.
The feature can be used for tasks that involve several steps, such as arranging parking for an event, completing lengthy online forms or ordering groceries. This marks a broader shift in the way AI assistants are being integrated into browsers, moving from information retrieval toward systems capable of interacting directly with online services.
Google has been gradually introducing autonomous browsing in selected markets, and the feature is now available in India on both computers and Android devices. Access remains limited to subscribers of Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra, reflecting the company's strategy of offering more advanced agentic capabilities through its premium AI plans.
The expansion also highlights growing concerns about the security of AI agents operating on the open web. Google says Gemini has been trained to identify threats such as prompt injection, in which malicious or misleading instructions embedded in webpages can attempt to influence an AI system's behavior.
For certain sensitive operations, Gemini may require the user to confirm an action before proceeding. Such safeguards are intended to keep people involved in decisions that could have significant consequences while reducing the risk of an AI agent being manipulated by hostile web content.
Language availability remains another limitation. On Android, Gemini in Chrome initially supports US and UK English, while Google says additional languages are planned. The computer version already supports several Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil.
The development reflects Google's broader effort to turn Chrome into more than a traditional web browser. By combining page understanding, generative AI and autonomous task execution, the company is positioning Gemini as an assistant capable not only of explaining what users see online but also of helping them complete actions across the web.
