Curtains Rise on the 29th International Book and Publishing Fair in Rabat

Rabat kicked off the 29th edition of the International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL-2024) today, marking the beginning of a ten-day celebration of literature, culture, and intellectual exchange. This prestigious event, organized by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication in collaboration with regional authorities, is set to captivate visitors with a diverse array of activities and exhibits from 48 countries.

The inauguration ceremony, which was attended by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, and several distinguished political, diplomatic, media, and cultural figures, set the stage for an extraordinary literary festival.

In his address, Bensaid highlighted the fair's significance as a gateway to cultural exploration and a testament to Morocco's commitment to fostering a vibrant literary landscape. He noted the profound impact of the SIEL on the publishing industry, both culturally and economically, as exhibitors seize the opportunity to showcase their work and connect with a wide-ranging audience.

This year's edition has bestowed a special honor upon UNESCO, welcoming the organization as the fair's esteemed guest. Eric Falt, Director of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for the Maghreb, expressed his appreciation for the recognition, emphasizing the strong ties between UNESCO and Morocco. Visitors can look forward to exploring UNESCO's work in science, communication, information, World Heritage sites, and biosphere reserves. The fair's program also includes conferences on pertinent themes like artificial intelligence and youth empowerment.

With 743 exhibitors from various countries converging in Rabat, SIEL-2024 promises a rich tapestry of literary and cultural experiences. The fair's comprehensive program features 241 engaging activities, including thought-provoking conferences, panel discussions, and interactive sessions. Attendees will have the chance to explore a multitude of topics, from Africa's cultural diversity and gendered writing to the relationship between media and technology, with insights from esteemed Moroccan and international writers, intellectuals, and poets.
