Colombian president urges Trump to stop “Slandering” him
Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Sunday strongly rejected accusations and threats made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed without evidence that Petro was involved in drug trafficking. In a message posted on social media platform X, Petro stated that his name does not appear in any judicial records related to drug trafficking and demanded that Trump stop spreading false claims.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump suggested that an operation in Colombia similar to the recent U.S. action in Venezuela would be “a good idea.” He accused the Colombian president of allowing drugs to be trafficked into the United States and warned that this situation would not continue for long.
Petro, a left-wing leader, has been openly critical of the Trump administration’s military actions in the region. He condemned the U.S. operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, describing it as an abduction carried out without legal justification.
Trump intensified his rhetoric by referring to Petro as an unstable leader and making disparaging remarks about Colombia, alleging that the country was deeply involved in cocaine production. The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded by denouncing Trump’s statements as unacceptable interference and called for mutual respect between nations.
Since the start of Trump’s second term, relations between Colombia and the United States have deteriorated, with frequent disputes over trade policies, migration issues, and regional security. Despite being long-standing military and economic allies, ties between the two countries are currently at one of their lowest points.
