Severe weather in Pakistan and Afghanistan leaves 121 dead in two weeks
Severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, storms, and flooding, have resulted in the deaths of at least 121 people across Pakistan and Afghanistan over the past two weeks, according to official disaster management authorities.
In Afghanistan, the national disaster agency reported that dozens of people have lost their lives due to intense weather events since late March. Floods, landslides, and lightning strikes have caused widespread damage in several provinces, leaving many others injured and displacing families.
Authorities indicated that within a short span of time, the situation has worsened due to continuous rainfall. In some areas, flash floods have swept through villages, destroying homes and infrastructure. Among the victims was a young child who was reportedly caught in rising floodwaters while playing outdoors in southeastern Afghanistan.
Neighboring Pakistan has also been severely affected. Officials confirmed multiple fatalities linked to similar weather conditions, particularly in the northern and southwestern regions. Emergency services have been responding to incidents of flooding, infrastructure damage, and casualties caused by storms.
Experts warn that such extreme weather events may become more frequent due to climate change, increasing the vulnerability of already fragile regions. Authorities in both countries continue to monitor the situation and provide assistance to affected communities.
