Magnitude 6 earthquake strikes off northern coast of Indonesia
A magnitude 6 earthquake was recorded Saturday off the northern island of Talaud in Indonesia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that there was no tsunami threat following the tremor. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 99 kilometers and approximately 90 kilometers southeast of Sarangani province on the Philippine island of Mindanao.
Harry Sauro, a provincial disaster management official in the Philippines, said the quake was "lightly felt" and no damage or injuries have been reported.
Both Indonesia and the Philippines lie within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a highly active seismic zone stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia across the Pacific basin, making earthquakes a common occurrence in the region.
Historically, the region has experienced devastating quakes. In 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake struck Indonesia’s Aceh province, triggering a tsunami that claimed more than 170,000 lives.
