China condemns Japan’s missile deployment plan near Taiwan as ‘Extremely Dangerous’

China has strongly condemned Japan’s reported plan to deploy missiles on Yonaguni Island, located near Taiwan, calling the move “an extremely dangerous” and warning it could escalate regional tensions.

At a press conference, Peng Qing’en, spokesperson for China’s State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said that Japan’s deployment of offensive weapons in areas adjacent to Taiwan “deliberately creates regional tensions and provokes military confrontation.” He emphasized that the Potsdam Proclamation of 1945 prohibits Japan from rearming, and that Japan’s pacifist constitution limits its military policy to defensive purposes only.

Peng reaffirmed that Taiwan is part of China and that Beijing will “never allow external forces to interfere in the Taiwan region” or permit a “resurgence of Japanese militarism.”

The warning follows comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who suggested that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could constitute an existential threat justifying Japan’s collective self-defense. Chinese authorities reacted sharply to Takaichi’s remarks, reportedly triggering cancellations of tourist trips to Japan, a ban on Japanese seafood imports, and the postponement of a trilateral culture ministers’ meeting with South Korea.

Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi confirmed that plans to deploy missiles on Yonaguni, approximately 110 kilometers from Taiwan, are moving forward, further heightening tensions between the two nations.
