Brazil: Six dead after helicopter collision in Rio de Janeiro
At least six people have been killed following a mid-air collision between two helicopters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian authorities confirmed on Sunday.
According to the fire department, the aircraft collided under unclear circumstances before crashing in an urban area of the city. The impact triggered a fire at the site of a car dealership parking lot, causing further destruction.
Emergency services reported that the blaze damaged at least 20 vehicles parked in the area. Firefighters quickly responded to the scene to contain the flames and secure the surroundings.
Officials confirmed that all six fatalities occurred as a direct result of the crash. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the collision.
Aviation accidents involving helicopters are not uncommon in densely populated cities like Rio de Janeiro, where air traffic includes both civilian and commercial operations. Authorities are expected to examine flight records and technical conditions as part of the ongoing inquiry.
