Marseille police officer seriously injured in vehicle stop as four suspects arrested
A French police officer was seriously injured during an attempted vehicle stop in Marseille after the driver allegedly refused to comply with police orders and struck the officer before fleeing. Authorities later arrested all four occupants of the vehicle.
The incident occurred on Monday evening in the city's 10th arrondissement, where officers from the Departmental Intervention Company (CDI 13) attempted to stop a car carrying four people as part of a routine police operation.
According to the initial investigation, the driver refused to stop and attempted to evade a vehicle immobilization device, commonly known as a stop stick, which had been deployed by officers to halt the vehicle safely.
During the maneuver, the vehicle hit one of the officers, throwing him approximately 20 meters and causing serious injuries to his lower limbs. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the officer's condition was initially considered life-threatening, but his life is no longer in danger.
Emergency medical teams transported the injured officer to hospital, where he remains under medical care.
Police subsequently apprehended the four individuals who had been inside the vehicle. Investigators are now examining the circumstances of the incident, including the driver's actions during the attempted escape and the sequence of events that led to the collision.
The case has renewed attention on the risks faced by law enforcement officers during refusal-to-comply incidents, which continue to represent a significant operational challenge for police forces in France.
Judicial authorities are expected to determine the charges against the suspects as the criminal investigation progresses.
