Boualem Sansal appeals five-year prison sentence in Algeria
Boualem Sansal, the renowned Franco-Algerian author, has officially appealed his five-year prison sentence, as confirmed by his French lawyer, Me François Zimeray. Sansal has been incarcerated since November 16, 2024, following his conviction last week. Zimeray also urged for a "humanitarian gesture" to facilitate the release of the 80-year-old writer.
Sansal's conviction stems from multiple charges, including "undermining national unity," "insulting state institutions," and "possessing videos and publications deemed a threat to the country's security and stability."
Foreign Minister visits Algeria
Zimeray's announcement comes shortly after a phone call between French President Emmanuel Macron and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune aimed at rejuvenating dialogue between the two nations. During this conversation, Macron reiterated his trust in Tebboune's judgement and called for clemency and humanity regarding Sansal's situation.
In a concurrent effort to foster reconciliation between Paris and Algiers, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot is set to visit Algeria on April 6 to swiftly reinvigorate diplomatic relations. Additionally, French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin is scheduled to make a visit soon to enhance judicial cooperation, particularly concerning the repatriation of Algerians facing deportation from France, which has been a point of contention in bilateral relations.
