Israel opens its first embassy in Slovenia since establishing diplomatic ties

Israel has officially opened an embassy in Slovenia for the first time since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992, marking a new step in their bilateral engagement.

The embassy was inaugurated on Wednesday in Ljubljana during a ceremony attended by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon. The opening is part of Israel’s broader effort to expand its diplomatic presence and strengthen ties with countries it considers strategic partners.

Following the ceremony, Sa’ar said the new mission was Israel’s fifth embassy opened during the previous 18 months. He stressed the importance of maintaining close relations with Israel’s partners in Europe and elsewhere, while expressing his intention to continue expanding the country’s diplomatic network.

Although Israel and Slovenia have maintained formal diplomatic relations for more than three decades, Israel had not previously operated a permanent embassy in Ljubljana. Its interests in Slovenia had instead been handled by diplomats based in Austria, reflecting the relatively limited institutional presence between the two countries.

The decision to establish a resident Israeli diplomatic mission in Slovenia was taken in June under the country’s new government led by Janez Janša, according to the source. The move represents a change in Ljubljana’s political orientation toward Israel compared with the previous administration.

Slovenia’s former centre-left government, led by Robert Golob, adopted a notably different position on the conflict in the Middle East. In 2024, Slovenia formally recognised the State of Palestine and introduced restrictions on arms supplies to Israel, placing Ljubljana among several European governments that took measures in response to the war in Gaza.

The opening of the Israeli embassy comes amid wider diplomatic shifts across Europe over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. European governments have increasingly debated how to balance relations with Israel, support for Palestinian statehood and concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

For Israel, establishing a permanent mission in Ljubljana provides a direct diplomatic channel for political dialogue and cooperation with Slovenia. Embassies also play a central role in promoting economic, cultural and technological exchanges, as well as providing consular services to citizens.

The new embassy is therefore expected to give bilateral relations a more permanent institutional framework and allow both sides to expand contacts across several areas. Its establishment also reflects Israel’s stated objective of reinforcing its diplomatic network and developing closer partnerships internationally.
