Trump says conflict with Iran will end immediately after November elections

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the ongoing conflict with Iran would come to an immediate end after the US congressional elections scheduled for early November, while suggesting that Tehran was seeking to influence the electoral process.

Speaking to reporters on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews near Washington, Trump argued that Iran was under increasing pressure and would not be able to sustain the confrontation indefinitely. He accused Iranian authorities of attempting to shape the outcome of the upcoming elections by influencing American voters.

Trump also indicated that any future agreement with Tehran would extend well beyond the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme. According to the president, discussions would address a broader range of issues that had not been part of previous negotiations, reflecting what he described as a significant expansion of the US agenda toward Iran.

The president’s remarks came amid continued military tensions between Washington and Tehran, including attacks involving Iranian oil vessels. Trump said US forces had already disabled nine Iranian ships and suggested that further actions could follow.

US Central Command had previously announced that American forces destroyed five vessels carrying Iranian crude oil on September 8. The announcement followed two separate incidents in which Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps allegedly attempted to target a US Navy vessel with ballistic missiles.

The latest developments highlight the increasingly complex nature of the confrontation between the United States and Iran, combining military operations, economic pressure and diplomatic efforts. Control over Iranian oil exports remains particularly significant, as Washington continues to use sanctions and maritime measures to restrict Tehran’s ability to generate revenue from energy sales.

Trump’s comments also introduce a political dimension to the conflict, linking its potential resolution to the US electoral calendar. The November congressional elections will determine the balance of power in Washington and could have important implications for the administration’s ability to pursue its foreign-policy agenda.

At the same time, Trump’s suggestion that negotiations could encompass issues beyond Iran’s nuclear activities points to the possibility of a wider agreement with Tehran. Such negotiations could involve regional security, Iran’s military capabilities and other contentious issues that have contributed to years of tension between the two countries.

For now, however, the situation remains volatile, with military activity continuing alongside statements about possible negotiations. Trump’s prediction of an immediate end to the conflict after the elections therefore represents a political assessment rather than a confirmed diplomatic agreement with Tehran.
