Bonmatí "I have to believe that change will come after Rubiales' conviction"
Aitana Bonmatí, the two-time Ballon d'Or winner, expressed her belief that change will occur after the conviction of former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales for sexual assault. Speaking ahead of Spain’s match against England at Wembley, Bonmatí emphasized that she "has to believe" change will follow, noting that the fight led by Jenni Hermoso and the Spanish women's team was not in vain.
Bonmatí reflected on Rubiales' conviction for kissing Hermoso without consent during the 2023 World Cup medal ceremony. While Rubiales was found guilty of sexual assault and fined €10,000, the court cleared him and his co-defendants of coercion charges related to alleged pressure on Hermoso to label the kiss as consensual. Bonmatí, along with her teammate Irene Paredes, expressed surprise at the acquittal on coercion charges, but remained optimistic about the outcome of the trial.
The 27-year-old midfielder voiced hope that this case would spark broader societal change, not just within football. She believes the case highlights the need for greater respect for women, both in football and beyond, and for better recognition of women's rights.
Support for the Spanish players has come from across the football world. England’s head coach Sarina Wiegman praised Hermoso's bravery in appealing the conviction, while Arsenal’s Alessia Russo also expressed solidarity with the Spanish players, recognizing their courage in speaking out. Bonmatí and her teammates appreciated this support, stating that it strengthened their resolve and helped them feel less isolated in their struggle.
Despite the challenges they’ve faced, the Spanish players remain determined. Bonmatí emphasized that the team’s fight for respect and equality extends beyond football, and they are proud to contribute to societal change. The Spanish team continues to perform at the highest level, showing resilience both on and off the pitch.
