Vinicius Junior and Bonmati Shine as FIFA Best Award Winners

Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati were crowned the best players in the world at FIFA’s prestigious The Best awards, recognizing their remarkable achievements in the 2023-2024 football season.

Vinicius Junior: A Journey of Perseverance

Vinicius Junior, a 24-year-old Brazilian forward, clinched the men’s player of the year award following a stellar season. Overcoming earlier disappointment after narrowly missing out on the Ballon d’Or, he expressed deep gratitude during his acceptance speech, reflecting on his journey from playing barefoot on the streets of Sao Goncalo to becoming a global football icon.

“It seemed impossible to get here,” Vinicius shared. “I’m doing it for many children who think everything is impossible. This moment proves that dreams can come true.”

Vinicius also used the occasion to voice resilience against challenges, including facing racial abuse and criticism. His determination was evident in his Instagram post, where he celebrated his hard-fought journey to becoming the world’s best player.

In the 2023-2024 season, Vinicius scored 24 goals in 39 appearances, played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s record-extending 15th European Cup victory, and became the youngest player to score in two Champions League finals. His remarkable form earned him top honors, outpacing Manchester City’s Rodri and Madrid teammate Jude Bellingham.

Aitana Bonmati: A Beacon of Excellence

On the women’s side, Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati added another accolade to her illustrious career by winning FIFA’s player of the year award for the second consecutive year. Bonmati, 26, enjoyed a historic season, securing the Spanish League, Spanish Cup, and Champions League titles with Barcelona.

“This is a team effort,” Bonmati emphasized during her speech. “It was a great year, and I am grateful to everyone who helps me improve daily—from the club to my teammates.”

Bonmati’s consistent brilliance has cemented her status as one of the all-time greats in women’s football.

Recognizing Excellence Across the Field

The awards also celebrated other standout performers:

 - Men’s Coach of the Year: Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid)

 - Women’s Coach of the Year: Emma Hayes (United States)

- Men’s Goalkeeper Award: Emiliano Martínez (Argentina)

- Women’s Goalkeeper Award: Alyssa Naeher (United States)

- FIFA Puskás Award: Alejandro Garnacho for his stunning overhead goal.

- FIFA Marta Award: Brazilian legend Marta, for her inspirational goal against Jamaica.

A Testament to Football’s Global Appeal

The winners were determined through a balanced voting system involving fans, national team captains and coaches, and media representatives. Performances from August 2023 to August 2024 formed the basis for the selection process.

Vinicius Junior and Aitana Bonmati’s triumphs underscore their extraordinary skill, determination, and impact on the global stage, inspiring future generations of footballers to dream big. Their victories celebrate not just individual talent but the unifying spirit of football that transcends boundaries.
