Azzedine Ounahi Rediscovers Form at Panathinaikos After Challenging Start
Rabat — Moroccan footballer Azzedine Ounahi has found his rhythm at Panathinaikos, overcoming early struggles in Greece after his loan from Olympique de Marseille (OM).
The 24-year-old midfielder rose to international prominence during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he played a crucial role in Morocco’s historic journey to the semifinals. However, following his $10-million transfer from Angers to OM, Ounahi faced limited playing time, which impacted his confidence.
In a candid interview, Ounahi reflected on his journey: “I’ve had difficult moments and a really hard transfer window. What happened will help me in life. This situation made me grow. I want to give my 100% to live up to the club and return to my best level.”
The turning point came last summer when Panathinaikos secured a loan deal for Ounahi. Initially, his time in Greece was challenging. Before the arrival of new coach Rui Vitória in November, Ounahi started just three of the first eight games, often struggling to leave a mark on the field.
Under Vitória’s guidance, however, Ounahi has flourished. He now plays a pivotal role in the team, starting most matches and rediscovering the form that made him a standout at the World Cup. Notably, he delivered a match-winning goal against Atromitos on December 4 and contributed a stunning assist in a crucial Conference League victory over FK Dinamo Minsk two weeks later.
“I’m a player who thrives on feeling supported. I need to feel loved and involved,” Ounahi shared, emphasizing the importance of the confidence he has regained under Vitória.
Ounahi’s loan deal includes an option for Panathinaikos to purchase him permanently, a possibility the Greek club is seriously considering. If exercised, Ounahi could continue his promising journey in Greece beyond his current contract with OM, which expires in 2027.
For Morocco’s national team, Ounahi remains a key figure, regularly featuring in the starting lineup. His versatility as both a box-to-box midfielder and a creative playmaker makes him an invaluable asset.
Ounahi’s journey to success began at the prestigious Mohamed VI Football Academy, where he honed his skills before joining Angers in 2021. His consistent performances earned him his first national team call-up and cemented his place as a rising star in international football.
From his World Cup heroics to his resurgence at Panathinaikos, Azzedine Ounahi continues to demonstrate resilience and a determination to excel at every level. His story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of finding the right environment to thrive.
