Morocco Unveils Star-Studded Squad for Crucial AFCON Qualifiers

Morocco's national football team coach Walid Regragui has announced a formidable lineup for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Gabon and Lesotho. The highly anticipated games, scheduled for September 6 and 9 at Agadir Grand Stadium, mark a critical juncture in Morocco's journey to the AFCON finals, which the country will host from December 2025 to January 2026.

The Atlas Lions' roster boasts an impressive array of talent across all positions. Between the posts, Regragui has called upon the experienced trio of Yassine Bounou, Munir El Kajoui, and Mehdi Benabid. The defensive line features standout players like Achraf Hakimi, Nayef Aguerd, and Noussair Mazraoui, alongside promising talents such as Mohamed Chibi and Adam Aznou.

In midfield, the squad is bolstered by the presence of Sofyan Amrabat, Bilal El Khannouss, and the newly included Brahim Diaz. The forward line promises excitement with the selection of Hakim Ziyech, Youssef En-Nesyri, and emerging stars like Ilias Akhomach and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli.

During the press conference, Regragui addressed his decision to include Nayef Aguerd and Azzedine Ounahi, despite their current struggles for playing time at their respective clubs. The coach emphasized the importance of maintaining trust in these key players, highlighting their unique skills and commitment to the national team.

"Both players are going through tough times, but they are outstanding talents," Regragui explained. "We have strong relationships with their clubs, and they are playing at top European teams. We hope their issues will be resolved soon." He further noted that both Aguerd and Ounahi had prioritized maintaining their competitive edge in Europe over offers from other leagues.

Regragui's selection strategy echoes his approach for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he chose certain players despite their limited club appearances. This decision underscores his belief in the importance of trust and support within the team dynamic.

As Morocco prepares to host the AFCON finals, these qualifying matches against Gabon and Lesotho take on added significance. The team's performance in these games will not only impact their qualification prospects but also set the tone for their campaign on home soil in the upcoming continental championship.

With a blend of established stars and emerging talents, Morocco's squad reflects the nation's footballing depth and ambition. As the Atlas Lions gear up for these crucial encounters, football fans across Africa and beyond will be watching closely to see if this star-studded lineup can deliver on its promise and secure Morocco's path to AFCON glory.
