Infantino reaffirms his ambition to expand football worldwide amid growing pressure
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reiterated his commitment to expanding football’s global reach, insisting that the sport should offer greater opportunities to countries outside its traditional powerhouses. His remarks come as criticism of his leadership continues to grow among several European football associations.
Speaking during a visit to the Dominican Republic, Infantino emphasized FIFA’s objective of reducing the gap between the world’s leading football nations and countries with fewer opportunities to develop the sport. He argued that football should become increasingly accessible across different regions and that international development should remain a central priority.
The FIFA president made the comments while meeting members of the Caribbean Football Union during an international youth football event. He highlighted what he described as the organization’s transformation in recent years and reaffirmed his intention to continue expanding the game internationally.
Infantino also stressed the importance of dialogue at a time when FIFA is facing criticism over several aspects of its leadership. He called for football officials to communicate openly and express their views, particularly following a period marked by disagreements and political tensions within the international football community.
The pressure on Infantino increased after football associations from Denmark, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Norway and Sweden jointly announced that they no longer had confidence in his leadership. The statement added to calls for greater scrutiny of his policies and management of the governing body.
Another issue contributing to the debate is the reported difficulty surrounding an attempt to sell a stake in FIFA to private investors. The development has raised questions about the organization’s financial strategy and the direction of its commercial activities.
Infantino, however, continues to defend his broader vision for international football. Rather than focusing exclusively on established football markets, he has repeatedly promoted greater investment and opportunities in emerging regions, particularly Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and other areas where the sport has significant development potential.
For FIFA, this approach involves expanding competitions, supporting grassroots football and strengthening the development of national associations. The objective is to create a more balanced global football ecosystem in which a wider range of countries can compete and develop their sporting infrastructure.
Infantino’s latest statements therefore represent both a reaffirmation of his long-term strategy and a response to the growing criticism surrounding his presidency. As debates over FIFA’s governance continue, the organization faces the challenge of balancing its global expansion ambitions with demands for greater confidence and transparency from its member associations.
