Anthropic introduces new identity verification measures for Claude users
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has announced updates to its privacy policy that could require certain users of its Claude chatbot platform to verify their identity or age using official government-issued documents.
Under the revised policy, which is scheduled to take effect in July, a limited number of users may be asked to provide proof of identity through documents such as passports, national identity cards, or driver's licenses. The company says the measure is designed to enhance platform security and improve its ability to address suspicious activity while offering users an opportunity to appeal account-related decisions.
According to Anthropic, the verification process will not apply to the majority of users. Instead, it is expected to focus on accounts that trigger security reviews or display unusual activity patterns. The company believes the approach can help reduce fraud, prevent misuse of services, and strengthen trust in its AI ecosystem.
As part of the verification process, users may be required to submit a photograph of an official identification document, along with a selfie or short video used to confirm identity. The process may also involve the creation of biometric identifiers that help verify whether the person accessing the account matches the submitted documentation.
Anthropic stated that it will retain information related to the verification outcome, such as confirmation that a user meets minimum age requirements. However, questions remain regarding the duration of data storage and the handling of sensitive personal information.
To manage the verification procedures, the company is relying on a specialized digital identity verification provider. Similar systems have become increasingly common across online platforms as technology companies seek to comply with regulatory requirements and strengthen protections against fraudulent activity.
The move comes at a time when artificial intelligence firms are facing growing scrutiny from regulators around the world. Governments and policymakers are increasingly focused on issues such as user safety, age verification, cybersecurity, transparency, and the responsible use of advanced AI systems.
Privacy advocates have also raised concerns about the collection of biometric data and identity documents. Experts warn that organizations handling sensitive information must maintain strong security standards to prevent unauthorized access, data breaches, or misuse of personal records.
Supporters of identity verification argue that such measures can help create safer digital environments, particularly as AI tools become more powerful and widely adopted. Critics, however, stress the importance of balancing security objectives with individual privacy rights and data protection principles.
Anthropic's latest policy update reflects a broader trend across the technology industry, where companies are introducing stricter verification and compliance measures in response to evolving regulations, security challenges, and public expectations regarding the safe use of artificial intelligence.
As the AI sector continues to expand, the debate over privacy, digital identity, and platform accountability is expected to remain at the center of discussions surrounding the future of emerging technologies.
