President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Susie Wiles, his co-campaign chair, as the White House chief of staff, placing her in one of Washington’s most influential unelected positions. Wiles, a seasoned strategist in Republican politics, will become the first woman to serve in this role.

At 67, Wiles is widely respected in GOP circles and has played a significant role in Trump’s political journey. Beyond her recent contributions to the 2024 campaign, she previously served as Trump’s state director in Florida, helping him secure key victories in past elections. “Susie Wiles was instrumental in one of the greatest political successes in American history,” Trump stated, commending her intelligence, resilience, and universal respect.

Although Trump referred to his 2020 campaign as “successful,” he lost that election to Joe Biden, a result he continues to dispute.

Wiles brings a wealth of political experience. Before joining Trump’s team, she guided Rick Scott’s successful run for Florida governor in 2010 and provided a crucial boost to Governor Ron DeSantis’s campaign in 2018. Her leadership in Trump’s landslide win against Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday solidified her standing as a top contender for the chief of staff role. “If she wants it, it’s hers,” a Trump adviser shared, noting her influence and recent achievements.

Wiles has a longstanding Republican background, starting her political career as an aide to Representative Jack Kemp in 1979, later serving as a personal secretary to Labor Secretary Raymond Donovan under President Reagan. She has held key roles in Florida, including positions with Republican mayors in Jacksonville.

Her connection with Trump began during his 2016 presidential campaign when he sought her expertise navigating Florida’s political landscape. Since then, she has remained part of Trump’s close circle. In addition to her public service, Wiles worked with Ballard Partners and the public affairs firm Mercury, maintaining her role with Mercury throughout Trump’s 2024 campaign.

The announcement of her new role has been met with widespread approval among Republicans. Senator Rick Scott, her former employer, praised Wiles’s leadership and team-building skills, calling her “the perfect person for this role.” Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., also expressed his support on social media, describing her appointment as “well-deserved.”

Wiles, the daughter of sports icon Pat Summerall, has yet to comment on her new position as she prepares to support Trump in building his administration.
