Trump criticizes Israel’s prosecutors amid Netanyahu corruption trial
U.S. President Donald Trump strongly condemned the prosecutors handling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's corruption trial, emphasizing that the United States, which provides Israel with billions of dollars in aid, would not tolerate the situation. Netanyahu, indicted in 2019 on charges including bribery, fraud, and breach of trust charges he denies has been undergoing trial since 2020 involving three separate criminal cases. Recently, a court rejected Netanyahu’s lawyers’ request to postpone his testimony due to diplomatic and security concerns following a recent conflict between Israel and Iran. Netanyahu is scheduled for cross-examination soon.
Trump described the actions of the prosecutors as "insane," warning that the legal proceedings could disrupt Netanyahu’s efforts to negotiate with Hamas and Iran. Netanyahu publicly thanked Trump for his support, expressing optimism about improving the Middle East. Trump further linked U.S. financial aid to Israel with his criticism, asserting that America’s substantial annual aid to Israel justified opposing the trial.
Trump claimed that Netanyahu was currently negotiating a deal with Hamas, though he provided no details. He also mentioned that a ceasefire in the region might be imminent. Meanwhile, Hamas has expressed willingness to release hostages in Gaza under a peace agreement, but Israel insists on Hamas’ disarmament, a demand Hamas rejects. The urgency for a resolution has increased following recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites.
