Israeli military eliminates Hamas spokesperson amid renewed Gaza offensive
Israeli forces have killed a Hamas spokesperson in an airstrike as they intensify military operations in Gaza.
Abdel-Latif al-Qanoua, a senior Hamas official, was killed when Israeli fighter jets targeted his tent in Jabalia, northern Gaza, early Thursday morning, according to Al-Aqsa television and the Shehab News Agency. Several others, including children, were injured in the attack, as reported by Al Jazeera correspondent Hind Khoudary.
The strike was part of a broader Israeli assault across Gaza, including an attack on a home in the as-Saftawi neighborhood of Gaza City, which claimed the lives of six family members.
On March 18, Israel ended a two-month ceasefire and resumed its air and ground offensive, killing hundreds of Palestinian civilians in an effort to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages. Several senior Hamas leaders have been targeted, including Ismail Barhoum, a key figure in the group's financial and political operations, who was killed in a strike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. Another air raid killed Salah al-Bardaweel, a senior Hamas politician, along with his wife.
Since the conflict began in October 2023, Hamas has held 59 hostages out of approximately 250 taken during its attack on Israel. At least 1,139 Israelis were killed in that assault, while Israeli operations in Gaza have resulted in more than 50,183 Palestinian deaths and 113,828 injuries. In the past ten days alone, Israeli strikes have killed 830 people, with women and children making up over half the casualties, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.
The humanitarian situation continues to worsen. The UN reported on Tuesday that 142,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced since March 18 due to Israeli military actions, exacerbating the crisis caused by restricted aid access.
Ceasefire negotiations mediated by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt have stalled, with Hamas accusing Israel of undermining peace efforts. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened to seize Gaza territory if Hamas does not release the remaining captives.
