Nine critically injured after deadly train collision near Bedford
A deadly train collision near Bedford in central England has left one person dead and several others seriously injured, prompting a major emergency response and a nationwide investigation into the cause of the accident.
The crash occurred on Friday evening when two passenger trains traveling toward London collided approximately 100 kilometers north of the British capital. The driver of one of the trains died at the scene, while dozens of passengers were injured.
According to British transport authorities, more than 80 people received medical treatment following the accident. As of Saturday morning, 28 individuals remained hospitalized, including nine passengers in critical condition.
Emergency crews, police officers, and railway specialists worked throughout the night to secure the area and assist victims. Images from the scene showed significant damage to the front section of one train, which became entangled with the rear of the other. Despite the impact, the carriages remained upright, likely helping to prevent an even greater loss of life.
Investigators have launched a full inquiry to determine the circumstances that led to the collision. Officials are examining operational procedures, signaling systems, and other factors that may have contributed to the incident.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the crash as a devastating event and expressed condolences to the victim's family. A statement from King Charles III also conveyed sadness over the tragedy and confirmed that the monarch is being regularly informed of developments.
The accident has renewed discussions about railway safety in the United Kingdom, where train travel remains one of the country's most widely used forms of public transportation. Authorities have pledged to provide updates as the investigation progresses and to support those affected by the disaster.
