Bangladesh: Measles Outbreak Exceeds 670 Deaths, Raising Concerns Among Health Authorities
Bangladesh is facing a worsening measles outbreak that has been affecting the country since mid-March. Health authorities announced on Friday the registration of four new child deaths linked to suspected cases of the disease in the last twenty-four hours, bringing the total toll to 670 confirmed or presumed deaths.
According to data published by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the majority of the recorded deaths remain classified as suspected, with 577 cases awaiting definitive confirmation. Laboratory analyses, however, have confirmed 93 deaths directly attributable to measles.
The evolution of the health situation remains concerning. In just one day, 1,078 new suspected cases have been reported across the country, raising the total number of recorded cases to 90,982 since the outbreak began on March 15.
In light of the scale of the outbreak, the Bangladeshi health system is under significant strain. More than 75,000 individuals exhibiting symptoms compatible with measles have been hospitalized since the onset of the health crisis. Authorities indicate that over 71,300 patients have been able to leave healthcare facilities after their recovery.
Measles is an extremely contagious viral disease that spreads through the air or by contact with respiratory droplets emitted by an infected person. Its rapid spread poses a major challenge for health systems, particularly in densely populated areas.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this infection can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, severe diarrhea, ear infections, neurological damage, and, in some cases, loss of vision or death.
Health authorities continue their efforts in epidemiological surveillance and patient management to limit the progression of the disease. This resurgence of cases underscores the importance of vaccination and strengthening preventive measures to avoid the emergence of new outbreaks.
As the number of cases continues to rise, the situation in Bangladesh illustrates the challenges faced by several countries regarding vaccination coverage and the resilience of health systems against infectious diseases.
