Alcohol Ban introduced on Paris riverbanks during Music Festival heatwave

Authorities in Paris have introduced temporary restrictions on alcohol consumption in public spaces along major waterways during this year’s Fête de la Musique, as the city prepares for an intense heatwave and large public gatherings.

The measure applies to popular areas such as the banks of the River Seine and the Canal Saint-Martin, including Quai de Jemmapes and Quai de Valmy. From Sunday morning, alcohol consumption will be prohibited in these locations, while the sale of alcoholic beverages in supermarkets near the canal area will also be restricted from the early afternoon.

The decision was issued by the Paris police prefecture as part of efforts to maintain public order during one of the busiest cultural events of the year. Officials warned that alcohol consumption in public spaces often contributes to disturbances and complicates crowd management, especially during large-scale celebrations.

This year’s Fête de la Musique is expected to draw unusually high attendance, coinciding with a severe heatwave forecast for the region. Weather conditions are expected to reach alert levels, increasing concerns over dehydration and health risks among participants.

Health authorities have also advised against alcohol consumption during extreme heat, noting that it can worsen dehydration and interfere with the body’s ability to regulate temperature. The prefecture emphasized that these medical recommendations played a key role in the decision.

Violations of the ban will result in fines of up to €135, according to the official order. Authorities stated that the restrictions are necessary to ensure both safety and comfort for residents and visitors during the festivities.

The Fête de la Musique remains one of the most popular cultural events in France, transforming cities into open-air stages each year, but officials are aiming to balance celebration with public safety in light of challenging weather conditions.
