Grief and Resilience: Uncovering the Tragedy at Al-Shifa Hospital

In a harrowing discovery, Palestinian survivors of Israel’s actions have identified 38 relatives from a newly uncovered mass grave at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, where the sanctity of death and proper burial has been tragically compromised.

Upon unearthing the grave, Gaza's civil defense reported that 48 bodies were exhumed on Thursday. The identification of 38 of these bodies has allowed families to begin the solemn process of burial, a deeply rooted cultural and religious obligation in Palestinian and Muslim traditions. The remaining 10 unidentified bodies have been entrusted to the forensic department of the health ministry for identification, as confirmed by civil defense spokesperson Mahmud Bassal. He noted that the exhumation efforts are ongoing, with approximately 160 more bodies believed to be buried at the hospital site.

Gaza resident Mohammed Abu Asi expressed the emotional toll of this grim task, stating, “It’s like experiencing the war all over again. Recovering my brother’s body feels as though we are burying him today — the pain and the wound have reopened.”

Similarly, Suha al-Sharif, a mother searching for her son, articulated her desperation: “I want to find him. I’m a mother — I am exhausted and do not know where my son is.”

Al-Shifa Medical Complex, established in 1946, once stood as the largest hospital in Gaza, boasting a capacity of 722 beds and employing 1,754 staff. Its destruction began with the Israeli military operations, which claimed that Hamas utilized the facility as a command center. Despite the absence of evidence supporting these allegations, the hospital faced relentless assaults, starting with bombings of ambulance convoys in November 2023, ultimately leading to its closure.

The courtyard of Al-Shifa became a site for multiple mass graves, where Palestinian patients who succumbed to Israeli attacks, as well as those who died due to a lack of medical resources, were interred. This includes the tragic loss of premature infants, who perished due to critical electricity shortages.

In March 2024, the Israeli Occupation Forces launched another siege on the complex, leading to further destruction and chaos. Reports from the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor indicate that approximately 1,500 Palestinians were killed, injured, or went missing as a result of the violence surrounding the Shifa compound, with a significant number being women and children.

As the exhumation process continues, the families of Gaza grapple with a profound grief intertwined with a resolute desire for justice and recognition of their losses.
