Next week, officials from the United States and Ukraine are set to meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss a peace framework aimed at resolving the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. This development comes shortly after the US suspended military assistance and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, following a tense interaction between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.

Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, confirmed that talks will take place in Saudi Arabia, potentially in Riyadh or Jeddah, to establish a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire. Zelenskyy also plans to visit Saudi Arabia to meet with the Crown Prince and discuss the peace process with US officials. He emphasized Ukraine's strong interest in achieving peace.

This will be the first high-level US-Ukrainian meeting since the February 28 encounter between Zelenskyy and Trump, which ended in a public argument. Following the dispute, Trump halted intelligence sharing and aid to Ukraine. However, Trump later revealed that he had received a letter from Zelenskyy expressing readiness for negotiations.

In a discussion with reporters, Trump expressed his belief that both Ukraine and Russia are seeking to make a deal. He suggested that Russia's willingness to negotiate might be due to their own constraints, which he claims to understand uniquely.

Witkoff mentioned that Zelenskyy had recently apologized for the White House confrontation and showed appreciation for the opportunity to meet. However, he expressed caution regarding a potential minerals deal between the US and Ukraine, noting that it remains uncertain whether the agreement would be finalized during the talks. This deal is seen as a strategic move by Ukraine to strengthen ties with the US and deter future Russian aggression.

The agreement would provide the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals, which could benefit industries like aerospace, electric vehicles, and medical manufacturing.
