Socialists Gather in Rabat for Key International Summit with Pedro Sánchez at the Helm

The Socialist International will convene in Rabat this weekend, with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, also the leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and the Socialist International, presiding over the event. Taking place from December 20 to 22, the summit will bring together political leaders and experts from across the globe to discuss critical issues and chart the future of socialist movements worldwide.

The Socialist International, founded in its current form in 1951, is the global alliance of socialist, labor, and social-democratic political parties, as well as affiliated unions. The organization, which includes 132 political parties, is one of the largest platforms for shaping policies on justice, sustainability, and human rights. Sánchez’s leadership of the Socialist International began in 2022 with a focus on advancing gender equality, combating climate change, and fostering an inclusive global economy.

The Rabat event will feature not only the global council but also a women’s session and a special African committee meeting, with over 70 participants from 15 countries. According to Driss Lachgar, the first secretary of the USFP, the conference highlights Morocco’s growing political influence on both the continental and international stages. Sánchez, who was re-elected head of PSOE in December 2024, previously visited Morocco in February to bolster Spain’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity regarding the Sahara conflict.

The gathering will conclude with the "Declaration of Rabat," which will outline the Socialist International’s stance on major global and regional issues, reaffirming its role as a leading voice for social justice, sustainable development, and peaceful conflict resolution.
