Flight Disruptions Continue Amid Thick Fog on Key Travel Day at UK Airports
As thick fog continues to blanket parts of the UK, flight disruptions are expected to intensify, particularly affecting one of the busiest travel days during the Christmas holiday period at Gatwick Airport.
Low visibility in several areas has prompted air traffic control provider Nats to implement temporary restrictions on flights, which are anticipated to last through Sunday. The dense fog has already led to delays and cancellations at major airports across the country, with Gatwick Airport confirming that more delays could follow. Travelers are urged to check with their airlines for up-to-date information.
For the past few days, airports including those in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, and Teesside have faced disruptions as dense fog reduced visibility to as little as 100 meters in some areas, according to the Met Office. The weather conditions have created significant challenges for travelers, particularly for those hoping to return home after the holiday season.
Among those affected is Kiera Quayle, who, along with her husband, remains stranded on the Isle of Man after their flight was delayed and eventually canceled due to the fog at Gatwick. With their new flight scheduled to depart only later in the day on Sunday, the couple has faced additional challenges in finding accommodation and making other travel arrangements. "We're lucky that we have family we can stay with, but it has been difficult organizing travel and where we are staying," she shared, adding that a neighbor had kindly agreed to look after their cat during the extended delay.
The Met Office has forecast that the weather will clear later on Sunday, bringing brighter conditions across the UK. However, the festive travel chaos isn't over yet, as forecasts predict snow and rain moving in toward the end of the year. A yellow weather warning for snow and rain has been issued for Scotland, with heavy showers expected to cause "significant disruption" as New Year's Eve approaches.
In addition, a wind warning has been issued for northern England, where gusts of up to 60 mph are possible on Monday, further complicating travel for those returning after the holiday period. With such extreme weather conditions, travelers are advised to stay informed and make necessary preparations for continued disruptions.
As the UK navigates these challenging weather conditions, passengers are reminded to remain patient and flexible, as delays and disruptions are expected to persist across the nation's airports.
