Crypto activity remains resilient despite falling valuations in 2026

The global cryptocurrency market has gone through a sharp correction in 2026, but the decline in asset valuations has not translated into a comparable contraction in underlying economic activity. According to Chainalysis, the global crypto economy generated around $9.4 trillion in on-chain activity between July 2025 and June 2026, down just 1.6% from the previous period. The figure highlights how the sector is increasingly supported by uses that extend beyond market speculation.

The resilience of activity stands in contrast with the roughly 50% decline in total crypto market capitalization during the same period, representing a loss of about $2.1 trillion. Chainalysis said the gap between falling valuations and relatively stable transaction activity reflects the diversification of crypto use cases, including payments, transfers and the growing role of stablecoins.

Smaller transactions have been particularly resilient. Chainalysis reported strong growth in transfers involving lower amounts, suggesting that blockchain networks continue to be used by individuals and businesses even when market conditions are unfavorable. The development points to a gradual shift in the way digital assets are used, with some transactions increasingly linked to the movement of money rather than attempts to profit from price fluctuations.

Stablecoins have emerged as one of the clearest drivers of this transformation. Designed to maintain a relatively stable value by being linked to assets such as the U.S. dollar, these digital currencies are increasingly being used to move funds across borders. Chainalysis estimated that cross-border stablecoin transfers rose 77.5% during the period studied, from $124.2 billion to $220.3 billion. Its estimate of monthly cross-border stablecoin flows also more than doubled between January 2025 and June 2026.

The average size of many of these transactions, at roughly $3,000, indicates that the trend is not limited to large financial institutions. Chainalysis said such transfers are consistent with everyday uses including payments to suppliers, sending money to relatives and moving savings between currencies. This gives stablecoins a growing role in cross-border financial activity, particularly where traditional payment systems can be expensive, slow or difficult to access.

Emerging markets have played an important role in this evolution. Latin America recorded significant growth in crypto activity during the period, while Brazil ranked first globally in Chainalysis’ 2026 grassroots crypto adoption index. The Brazilian market was valued at approximately $252.5 billion and ranked among the leading markets across the different measures used by the research firm.

At the same time, blockchain technology is increasingly attracting traditional financial institutions. Goldman Sachs’ Financial Square Treasury Instruments Fund, which had more than $100 billion in net assets during 2026, has been made accessible to eligible U.S. institutional participants through Lynq, a private settlement network based on Avalanche technology. The arrangement uses blockchain infrastructure for access and settlement while the underlying fund shares remain traditional securities rather than becoming a new tokenized version of the fund.

The development illustrates a broader trend in which blockchain networks are being considered as alternative infrastructure for financial products that already exist in traditional markets. Rather than replacing conventional investment products outright, distributed-ledger technology can provide additional channels for settlement, distribution and the movement of financial assets.

The boundary between traditional securities and digital assets is also becoming less distinct. In September, Ethena expanded the strategy supporting its USDe synthetic dollar to tokenized U.S. equities, using Binance’s bStocks alongside equity perpetual contracts. The development represents another attempt to connect blockchain-based financial products with instruments linked to traditional markets, while also introducing additional considerations around liquidity, market conditions and counterparty exposure.

Regulation is meanwhile becoming an increasingly important part of the sector’s development. In the United States, the Federal Reserve on September 24 requested public comments on two proposals designed to establish a regulatory framework for payment stablecoin issuers supervised by the central bank under the GENIUS Act. The proposals address reserve assets, capital requirements, risk management and procedures for banks seeking approval to issue payment stablecoins.

Under the proposed framework, supervised payment stablecoin issuers would be required to fully back their tokens with permitted reserve assets, including short-term Treasury bills and certain other high-quality liquid assets. The Federal Reserve said the rules are intended to address credit and operational risks while establishing clearer requirements for institutions involved in stablecoin activities.

Bitcoin remains the most visible asset in the cryptocurrency market, but the data from 2026 points to an ecosystem that is becoming increasingly diverse. Stablecoins, payment services, cross-border transfers, tokenized securities and blockchain-based settlement networks now form important parts of crypto-related activity alongside traditional trading.

The figures do not mean that speculation or volatility have disappeared. Instead, they indicate that market activity is increasingly accompanied by financial and payment applications that can continue operating even during periods of falling valuations. With around $9.4 trillion in activity recorded over the twelve-month period studied by Chainalysis, the global crypto economy has demonstrated a degree of resilience despite one of its sharpest market downturns since 2022.

The future development of the sector will depend in part on how effectively blockchain-based services can operate within increasingly detailed regulatory and financial frameworks. The evolution of stablecoins, tokenized assets and institutional settlement infrastructure suggests that the cryptocurrency market in 2026 is becoming less defined solely by asset prices and increasingly shaped by the broader financial uses built around blockchain technology.
