The announcement comes as European Union leaders prepare for a summit on defense and Ukraine, set for Thursday. European nations are intensifying efforts to increase defense spending and strengthen support for Ukraine, which is engaged in a conflict with Russian forces. This push is driven by rising concerns about the commitment of the U.S. administration to Europe's defense.
In a recent move, U.S. President Donald Trump paused military aid to Kyiv, signaling a shift in U.S. policy toward a more conciliatory approach with Russia. In response, France is working to rebuild ties between the U.S. and Ukraine, with the goal of securing a "lasting and robust peace," according to government spokesperson Sophie Primas.
Earlier this week, France and Britain proposed a partial one-month truce between Russia and Ukraine, focusing on air, sea, and energy infrastructure, though ground fighting would continue.
