Soukaina Glamour gets five-month prison sentence after Marrakech appeal

The Marrakech Court of Appeal has reduced the prison sentence handed to Moroccan content creator Soukaina Janah, widely known as “Soukaina Glamour,” bringing it down from 10 months to five months.

The decision was issued on Thursday, September 17, in a case that began after authorities examined material broadcast during one of Janah’s social media livestreams.

Alongside the shorter prison term, the court also reduced the period during which she is barred from using social media. The restriction, initially imposed for three years, has now been set at one year.

Case began after livestream

The proceedings stem from a livestream broadcast in August, during which Janah was presenting homewear. The material attracted the attention of Morocco’s digital monitoring services, which reported certain sequences in the broadcast.

Those sequences were subsequently treated by the authorities as constituting a violation of public decency, leading to legal proceedings against the content creator.

Janah was arrested on August 12 at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, where she was preparing to leave Morocco.

Previous conviction

The latest ruling comes against the backdrop of Janah’s previous encounters with the Moroccan justice system.

She was previously sentenced to two years in prison in connection with the case involving the social media account known as “Hamza Mon BB.” She served that sentence between 2019 and 2021.

Her latest conviction therefore comes several years after her release and marks another judicial case involving the Moroccan content creator.

A case drawing attention to online content

The proceedings also highlight the legal scrutiny surrounding material published through social media platforms in Morocco, particularly when authorities consider publicly distributed content to breach established standards of public decency.

With the appeal court’s decision, both the prison sentence and the social media restriction imposed in the first ruling have been reduced.
