Morocco, Brazil discuss expanding security cooperation

Morocco’s Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance met Brazil’s ambassador to Morocco in Rabat to review the state of bilateral security cooperation and outline new areas for expansion. The discussions focused on strengthening coordination in policing and intelligence work under an agreement signed in 2024.

Both sides examined cooperation across key security priorities, including border control, counterterrorism operations, and the fight against transnational criminal networks. Officials highlighted shared concerns over trafficking routes and evolving threats linked to organized crime operating across regions connecting Africa and South America.

The meeting also assessed practical mechanisms for deeper collaboration. These included expanded police training programs, improved exchange of operational information, and joint efforts to combat irregular migration networks. Special attention was given to monitoring extremist activity linked to instability in the Sahel-Sahara region.

The 2024 memorandum of understanding between Moroccan and Brazilian security authorities provides the framework for this cooperation. It covers a wide spectrum of issues, including drug trafficking, cybercrime, human trafficking, illicit arms trade, document forgery, and money laundering. Both parties reaffirmed their intention to strengthen implementation and improve coordination between their respective security institutions.
