Morocco wins overwhelming ECOSOC seat with 178 votes
Morocco secured election to the United Nations Economic and Social Council after receiving 178 votes out of 187 during a ballot held at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The result confirms strong international backing for Morocco’s candidacy for the 2027 to 2029 term.
The Economic and Social Council serves as one of the principal organs of the United Nations. It coordinates global economic, social, and environmental work and oversees follow-up on major international development commitments. Its structure includes key platforms such as the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, the Financing for Development Forum, and the Humanitarian Affairs Segment.
Following its election, Morocco emphasized the role of the council in addressing interconnected global challenges. It positioned ECOSOC as a central platform for improving coordination within the United Nations development system and accelerating progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The country also reiterated its commitment to multilateral engagement and international cooperation.
Morocco has increased its participation in United Nations mechanisms in recent years, reflecting its broader diplomatic strategy. Earlier in the week, it also secured a seat at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly through a selection process conducted by the UN Secretary-General. The latest ECOSOC result reinforces its growing presence in global governance structures.
