Real Madrid players spark controversy over Ceuta solidarity message

The appearance of Real Madrid players wearing shirts carrying a message of solidarity with residents of Ceuta has triggered a heated debate across Spanish sports media and social networks, adding a new chapter to an issue that has repeatedly crossed the boundary between football and the sensitive political context surrounding the Spanish-administered city.

Before Real Madrid’s La Liga match against Elche on Tuesday, players from both teams entered the pitch wearing shirts displaying the phrase “Todos somos Caballas,” a reference to the inhabitants of Ceuta, where residents are commonly known as “caballas.” The message was intended to express solidarity with the population of the North African city.

However, the way several Real Madrid players held the shirts attracted particular attention. Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Ibrahima Konaté were seen holding the garments around chest level, leaving part of the message hidden. Images of the players quickly circulated online, prompting debate over whether the positioning was deliberate or simply a consequence of how the shirts were being held.

The incident generated criticism from sections of Spanish social media and sports commentary. Some users accused the players of failing to display the full message, while others called for disciplinary measures. More extreme reactions included demands that the players be removed from the club, although such calls reflected individual reactions rather than an established position by Real Madrid or Spanish football authorities.

The controversy comes shortly after Moroccan international Abdessamad Ezzalzouli faced a similar reaction after wearing the same shirt during Real Betis’ match against Villarreal. His decision prompted criticism and debate over the political implications of the message.

Ezzalzouli subsequently explained that his gesture was not intended as a political statement or as an affront to Moroccans. He described it as an expression of human solidarity with people experiencing difficult circumstances, regardless of nationality, while also reaffirming his Moroccan roots. He did not issue an apology for wearing the shirt.

The latest episode illustrates how football can become intertwined with broader social and political sensitivities in Spain, particularly when messages concern Ceuta and its relationship with Morocco. Ceuta is a Spanish-administered city on the North African coast, bordering Morocco, and its status has long been a sensitive subject in relations between Madrid and Rabat.

For the players involved, the controversy has so far centered largely on the interpretation of their gesture rather than on any formal political declaration. The episode nevertheless demonstrates how even a short message displayed before a football match can generate significant public debate when it touches on an issue with strong regional and diplomatic sensitivities.
